Homework
Our thoughts on homework and parental engagement:

We believe that parents are the first and best teachers of their children.

We aim to give parents the tools they need to support and enrich learning at home, while recognising that family time is important too. We know that children benefit when their parents and carers are engaged in their learning, and we believe that well-chosen homework can help to consolidate and strengthen learning from school.

Our approach to homework develops progressively as children move through the school. We place particular emphasis on daily reading in the younger year groups, before gradually introducing more independent and subject-specific home learning as children get older. This progression reflects what we believe is most important at each stage, while balancing screen time and preparing children for the increasing independence and expectations of secondary school.
We appreciate that there is never a 'one-size-fits-all' solution. Some families prefer to keep home learning to a minimum and maximise precious family time, while others enjoy engaging in additional learning activities at home. Our approach aims to provide a clear core expectation, alongside optional opportunities for children who would like to do more.
Homework is set each Friday and is due the following Friday.

EYFS, Years 1 & 2 |
English reading – at least 4 times per week Additional phonics practice through RWI videos and NumBots, if wanted. At this stage, our priority is developing a love of books, building confidence with reading and strengthening early phonics. Additional activities are optional and should be kept short and enjoyable. |

Year 3 & 4 |
English reading – at least 4 times per week Maths - Times Tables Rock Stars Additional SPaG.com and Maths.co.uk per half-term available, if wanted. At this stage, our focus is to continue building fluency and confidence in both reading and times tables. Regular reading helps children to develop accuracy, expression, vocabulary and comprehension, while regular times tables practice develops the rapid recall needed to support wider mathematical learning. |

Years 5 & 6 |
English reading – at least 4 times per week English grammar – SPaG.com Maths – maths.co.uk In Years 5 and 6, homework becomes more structured and prepares children for the increased independence and expectations they will experience at secondary school. |
Optional Online Learning
We recognise that families have different circumstances and that children enjoy different types of learning. Where online platforms such as RWI videos, NumBots, Times Tables Rock Stars, maths.co.uk and SPaG.com are provided as optional activities, they are intended to support and consolidate learning rather than create additional pressure.
For Reception to Year 2 in particular, we encourage families to prioritise reading over additional screen-based homework.
Our overall aim is for children to develop positive learning habits, a love of reading and increasing independence, while ensuring that homework remains manageable, purposeful and age-appropriate.
