EYFS

Early Years Foundation Stage

At St. Joseph’s, we provide all our EYFS children with rich, varied and engaging learning opportunities across all seven areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum. Our learning environments are carefully designed to inspire curiosity and encourage independence, whilst supporting children in developing the skills, knowledge and confidence they need to thrive.

Our indoor and outdoor classrooms offer a free-flow learning environment, allowing children to move between spaces and make choices about their learning. They have access to a wealth of continuous provision and a wide range of carefully selected resources, both within the indoor classrooms and our large, well-equipped outdoor learning environment. Children are able to access the outdoor environment throughout the day, every day, enabling them to explore and learn through first-hand experiences.

Learning in EYFS is rooted in play, with a balance of child-initiated and adult-led experiences. Through these opportunities, children are encouraged to become active learners and build positive relationships with others.

Assessment is an integral part of our practice. Children are continually observed and assessed and these observations are then used to identify their next steps and plan experiences that build on individual strengths and needs. Ongoing observations and assessments are recorded in children’s online learning journey (Tapestry) and learning folders, providing a valuable record of their progress and achievements.

Throughout the year, children are assessed across all areas of learning through observation, conversation and practical activities. At the end of the Reception year, children are assessed against the Early Learning Goals, providing a picture of their development and the progress they have made during their time in the EYFS.
